Nearly a DVD!

June 21, 2013

I first heard about the plans for a new box set late in 2012 from fellow Showaddywaddy fan Steve Thorpe.

Demon were on board with the project from an early phase, and a number of ideas were put forward. One of these was to include a DVD with the release, which was to be a compilation of the promotional videos the band released in the 1970s and 1980s.

These promos were originally released on in “The Best Steps to Heaven” video in 1987.

Since the video was released, two further promos have been discovered that were not included. “I Wonder Why” was found on a tape originally supplied by Russ Field, and “You Got What It Takes” was shown on a satellite TV music channel a couple of years ago, and spotted by the eagle-eyed Chris Dabbs.

In the event, unfortunately there was no trace of the original promo video recordings anywhere in the archives, so that put paid to that idea.

  1. Hi, Could you not have retrieved the promo’s from a VHS and cleaned them up to DVD quality for release? Thanks.

Unfortunately not! It would have cost a small fortune to do this, and the overall budget for the box set was already quite limited to ensure that the retail price remained under £30. Demon checked in their extensive archive for the video masters to re-create ‘The Best Steps To Heaven’ as a DVD release, but although they now own VCI who released the original 1987 VHS, the masters were nowhere to be found. Dave Bartram has 3 video masters at home, but although this was good to know it didn’t change our decision on making a DVD part of the set. Plus Michael Neidus pointed out that over time the VHS tapes would have stretched and therefore synching new audio to them would have been a very tricky exercise. Hope that answers your question?

  3. I believe Demon did think about this but the costs of doing so would have been too great, and doing so will have significantly increased the cost of the box set.

Steve Thorpe will be able to confirm more details.

Any more news about a DVD

Unfortunately not Derek – the masters for the promo videos can’t be found at the moment. Dave has two or three in his personal collection, but the remaining ones are not in the Demon archive. We looked for them when compiling the box set to include a DVD of The Best Steps To Heaven nut no luck. I think it’s unlikely that this will ever see the light of day.
